P.S. Advanced 2

Due to a re-think on tonight and the logistics of getting another classroom to view and correct the writings and to avoid unnecessary complications etc, I have decided not to go forward with that plan!  At 7.45, after the listening exam, those who are not doing speaking are free to go home...the results of the 4 exams will be on the night of the 31st of May, between 7pm and 8.30 pm, as previously planned. You may view your papers then, if so desired.  See you later on then.

A Message For Advanced 2

Hello everyone,

It seems the weather is cooler today, thankfully.

I have had a plan regarding Monday...as you know we have the listening exam on Monday at 7pm and then I have speakings with some people. I would like to return your exam writings to you on Monday which would mean that I will open another classroom for you so that you can do the corrections there and then you give the corrections to me when you are finished, that same Monday evening ...I cannot allow you to take the writings home to correct, they will have to be corrected in the classroom. Then on the 31st of May, the evening the exam  results are published, you will have the possibility of seeing the writings again between 7pm and 8.30pm, if you so wish, there is no obligation to do so.

Regarding the listening exam, it is essential that those people who want to do the Listening exam come on Monday at 7pm as this is the only day I will be doing the Listening exam.  The exam will start at 7pm, we have to start punctually as I have to do speaking exams afterwards.

Chin up, everybody, the exams will soon be over and you will have a long, relaxing summer to enjoy, meanwhile, stay positive! : )

Beautiful Dog Living in Wood Needs a Home...

...Diane is looking for a home for a quiet and lovable dog that she has seen living in the woods near where she lives. The dog is quite thin and needs a home urgently. If you would like to adopt this lovely dog or know of someone who would be able to give this dog a home, please leave a message here or contact either Diane or I in the EOI in Santa Brigida. Please let's try our best to find this gorgeous creature a home...thanks.

Hi everyone,

Just to confirm some advice that I have already given in class. : )

Speaking Exam

1. You have practiced a lot of speaking in class throughout the year and I am very confident that you will do well in your Speaking Exam if you remain calm and focused. The trick is to believe that you will do it well and then you will do it well... ; )

2. Remember that you cannot take any books nor notes into the classroom when it is your speaking turn. You just need pen and I will give you some paper to make notes.

3. The Speaking Exam is an opportunity for you to 'show off' the vocabulary and grammar we have studied in class!

4. Please do not learn things by heart and repeat them. It is ok to learn expressions and words, naturally, but do not recite whole pieces that you have learned by heart as this will not sound 'natural' in the exam.

5. Practice as much as possible...why not practice by recording yourself on Vocaroo and then listen to yourself...I guarantee it will help you.

6. And last but not least, take it easy!

Writing Exam

1. The Writing Exam is based on the writings we have done from the Work-Book portfolio (P.70/71, P.78/79, P.90/91, P.98/99,P.100/101). It is important you know the special expressions you learnt from these pages in the work-book. The Writing Exam is also based on the work we did in the Students' book. This is another opportunity for you to use the grammar and vocabulary that we have studied throughout the year.

General Comments

1. The results of the Exams will be posted on the notice-board on Thursday the 31st of May at 5pm. If you want to talk to me about your exam result, I will be in the classroom between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm.

2. And finally, best of luck to everybody in the exams. It has been a pleasure working with you all.

Hi everyone,

I would just like to confirm some points that I have already covered in class regarding the exams.

Writing Exam

1. The Proficiency Exam in Writing is based on all the writings we have studied, as you know... (review, report,  story/descriptions, article, discursive compositions, summaries, informal letter, letter of application, letter of complaint...). If you have been practising the writings during the year, you should do ok. Last night in class, I gave a clue which was actually wrong as I said that the writings in this exam had not appeared before in the exams we did throughout the year but that isn't right....some of them have appeared!

2. For those of you who still need to get feedback on their writing corrections, can you bring them to class next Monday and while you are doing the Reading Exam, I will check the corrections you have done.

3. As I have reiterated lots of time in class, I am looking for variety in both advanced level grammar and vocabulary...good organisation and coherence and relevance. It is essential to not have two or more 'basic' grammar mistakes in order to pass...so check thoroughly before handing in the writing exam. Some of you have improved your writing greatly throughout the year ...I salute you for that and keep up the good work now in the exam.

Speaking Exam

1. This is basically the same advice I have given Intermediate 1 - stay calm and focused and you should do ok. And as I have emphasised lots of times, use variety in your advanced level grammar and vocabulary and organise your thoughts and ideas in a coherent and relevant way.

2. Please don't memorise large chunks of information as this will not sound 'natural' in the exam.

Reading Corrections

Here are the answers to the Reading you are finishing.

Reading 'Where the landscape will do the walking' 7F    8D    9G   10E     11A     12C

General Comments

1. Go here to find models of Certification Exams to practice.

2. The results of the exams will be posted on the noticeboard on the 31st of May at 7pm. If you would like to talk to me about your results, I will be available between 7pm and 8.30pm to meet you in the classroom.

3. And last but not least, the best of luck to you all. Stay confident, believe in yourself and you will fly through the exams. Thanks to those of you who have worked hard and made tremendous effort all year, it has been a pleasure working with you. See you next week.

The following interactions are included in the possible interactions that will be part of your May Speaking Exam.

Discuss one of the following with your partner, asking each others' opinion and using agreeing and disagreeing language (see page 59 and the Functions hand-out I gave you)

Make sure you can express reasons why you might agree or not agree with these statements. Use a variety of grammar tenses and use vocabulary and expressions we have studied in class.

1. Footballers get paid too much.

2. There is too much violence on TV.

3. People who live in flats shouldn't keep pets.

4. Public transport should be free.

5. Tourists destroy the places they visit.

6. Smoking shouldn't be allowed in public places.

Advanced 2 Speaking Practice

Here are some Monologues and Interactions that you can practice with, they are from real exams in the mainland.

Prepare them for next Monday. Why not record yourself on Vocaroo to see how you sound?? Or better still, send it to your partner to get some feedback....!
